Zadar, home of the oldest Croatian university founded in 1396 was given the opportunity to establish within its university the Department of Health Studies along with the nursing study programme. Founded on the tradition of social sciences and humanities, the Department reinvented study programmes related to health sciences that once existed in Zadar.
The rich tradition of medical sciences in Zadar dates back to:
The first medical school, founded in 1806
The first midwifery school founded in 1821 and
The first organisation of the Red Cross in Croatia, founded in 1878.
The Department of Health Studies is the first department in the field of biomedicine and health founded at the university of Zadar. On 4 December 2007 the Department was accredited for the Professional Undergraduate Study Programme of Nursing and on 2 November 2012 for the Undergraduate University Study Programme of Nursing. From the academic year 2014/2015 the University Study Programme of Nursing has been alligned at 82,3% with all the higher education institutions in the Republic of Croatia.
Since its foundation, the Department has elected more than 60 professors to a titular position, 20 of which were elected into a cummulative work relationship with the Department.
The city of Zadar and its administration recognized the exceptional importance of our Study Programmes for the city as well as the region. Therefore, in the academic year of 2008/2009 they assigned the Department facilities in the location of the former Đuro Đaković military barracs, on the address Splitska 1. During 2012, the facilities were adapted and converted to classrooms and well-equipped laboratories.
Both Study programmes of Nursing are implemented by the University of Zadar, Department for Health Studies and Zadar General Hospital. Due to initiative and constant inquiries for a graduate level of studies of Nursing by the Undergraduate students, we are considering of organising the Graduate level of studies as well.
